Interproximal reduction contra angle handpiece (IPR)  is the removal of a small amount of outer enamel between two adjacent teeth from the tooth surface. This is a way to get extra space to create the ideal tooth arrangement. Alternative names include: refinement, peeling, reduction of tooth enamel, and re-proximity.

•Create space to improve tooth alignment.

•Helps to improve occlusion (the way teeth bite).

•The stability of the teeth can be increased, so they will maintain their position for a long time.

•Can reduce the black triangle. This is caused by the absence of gum tissue (gum papilla) between the teeth and the appearance of dark spaces or holes.

•In some cases, IPR can alleviate the need for permanent tooth extraction.

•Note: For the reasons mentioned above, IPR can also be used with tooth extraction.

•May help improve the appearance of teeth, reshaping teeth for better aesthetic results.
